For those of you in the Rochester, Minnesota area, here are some volunteer opportunities published in the Post-Bulletin August 7, 2010. More opportunities can be found by calling (507)529-4831 or by clicking on the United Way link to the right.

Academic Coaches You can help children ages 5-17 years gain the self-esteem that comes from achieving good academic grades. Academic coaches are needed in all subjects. Call 254-3387 for more information or to volunteer with Juneteenth Organization For Youth.

Transportation VolunteerMany area seniors do not have friends or family who can drive, and cannot afford private transportation. You can make a huge difference in someone's life by simply giving them a ride! Call 285-5272 for more information or to volunteer with the Elder Network.

Victim Services Volunteer Training This 40-hour free training is required in order to volunteer with Victim Services and answer our crisis line. The training encompasses issues related to sexual violence and the criminal justice system, as well as teaching crisis intervention skills. The next training will begin Sept. 21 and run through Nov. 9. Call 328-7276 for more information or to volunteer with Victim Services.

Children's Dental Health Services Receptionist The receptionist plays a very important role as the first person that our patients and their families meet as they enter our facility to receive dental care. You will greet and make families feel comfortable, provide information and important forms for the families to complete, answer the phone, organize appointments for the dental hygienist, and collect and files forms. Call 529-0436 for more information or to volunteer with Children's Dental Health Services.

Running Start for School Volunteers Distribution days for Running Start are Aug. 24 and 25. The day is a fun, exciting volunteer opportunity. We need volunteers next week to sort school supplies and assemble school kits. Morning, afternoon, and evening shifts are available for individuals, families, or groups. Go to www.uwolmsted.org/runningstart and click "Volunteer with Running Start" to see the opportunities available or call 287-1958 to volunteer.
